Take three small bones (e.g. from chicken or pig)

  1. Try to bend a normal bone. What happens?
  2. Burn a bone in a flame/oven, (destroying organic material), what happen now if you try to bend the bone?  
  3. Put a bone in a strong acid for several hours/days, this can dissolve certain minerals. What happen now if you try to bend the bone?  

  4. Research question: What is the difference? How can you explain this?

Bones exist out of calciumphosphate (=kalkzouten) and flexible collagen (=lijmstof)

  • Young people's bones are soft and flexible. Older people have brittle and easily breakable bones. What changes in bone structure when you get older?

  • Fontanelles close up after about 18 months
