Assignment overview
  1. Getting the party started and creating two political party flyers (weighs 2).
  2. Either participating in a political debate or creating a TV ad for your party. This part is not for a grade; it helps you prepare for the third part. At the end of this part, we will, however, have mock elections to find out how popular the different parties are. N.B. You're not allowed to vote for your own party.
  3. Speaking test on a news topic selected by your teacher (weighs 2).

Part one: 
Get the Party Started! + Two political party flyers (1)
  • Come up with a political party which reflects your political ideas. 
  • During this part of the assignment, you work in a group of four.
  • Sign up with your teacher.

Part one:
Get the Party Started! + Two political party flyers (2)
You creat two different flyers. The flyers should include:
  • Party name and symbol
  • Choose a name for your political party. 
  • Design a symbol or logo that represents your party’s values.
  • Party Mission Statement: Write a brief mission statement (2-3 sentences) that explains the purpose of your party and what it stands for.
Core Values:
  • Identify and list at least 5 democratic core values or principles that your party will uphold. Explain why each value is important to your party.

Part one:

  • One flyer is aimed at voters in the age group 45 years and older
  • The other flyer is aimed at the age group 18 to 44 years old

  • Make sure that both flyers target their intended audience in a convincing way without changing or compromising the party mission and core values.

  • Let your teacher know what your group will participate in.

Part two:
Advertisement
  • Your goal is to debate in favour of the political party’s values, policies, and objectives. 
  • You should argue from the perspective of the party, as if you are a representative, while acknowledging opposing viewpoints

  • Everyone who is not debating is part of the audience. At the end of each debating round the audience can ask critical questions.

Part two:
Advertisement
  • Create a television advertisement that convinces television viewers to vote for your political party. 
  • The ad must be between 30-60 seconds. Before you get started, take a look at the overview of political television ads used in US election by the republicans and the democrats for inspiration.
  • The ad is performed in front of the class in front of your fellow classmates who are allowed to ask critical questions at the end of the ad.
