Food chain: Row of organisms that eat each other, with arrows between the organisms. 

Food web: Number of interconnected food chains.

Great tits and treecreepers are competitors.
They eat the same food: insects.

How do they each get enough food?

1. They don't live in the same tree.
2. They search different pat of the tree for insects.
3. They look for insects at a different time.
4. They live in different biotopes.

Producers, consumers and degradants

Producers: Green plants, the makers of glucose (by photosynthesis) and other nutrients in the food cycle.

Consumer: Animals and humans, the users of glucose and nutrients produced by plants.

Decomposers: Fungi and bacteria that break down natural waste so that minerals in the soil are available again for the producers.

Food pyramid

Numbers of organisms in a food chain. 

Each link in the chain is a staircase in the pyramid.
