Roman times. Trade was important
Early middle ages. Farming became the main source of income.
  • Agricultural society, almost everyone is a farmer.

Manor.
  • Large piece of land. Split up in two parts.
  • Domain and surrounding fields (lord).
  • Small farmhouses and fields (serfs).
  • The lord gave protection, farms and lands.

No freedom for the farmers.
  • Can't leave the manor without premission.
  • Can't marry outside the manor without approval from the lord.
  • Pay taxes to use the mill.
