The VOC traded with the East Indies since the 17th century
In 1799, the VOC went bankrupt
The Dutch government took the assets of the VOC and they establish The Dutch East Indies.
The local people are subjected to a lot of violence.

He used a divide and rule tactic: amethod of government where you put groups against each other to prevent them from cooperating, with the aim of making it easier for yourself to govern.

This lead to exploitation: to exploit the local people van de lokale and resources.
