The Present Simple
The Present Simple in Dutch
The present simple in Dutch looks like this:

ik word
jij wordt
hij/zij/het wordt
wij worden
jullie worden
zij worden

Pay attention to the verb! Sometimes it's with a -d, sometimes with -dt and sometimes with -en...

The Present Simple
Present Simple (tegenwoordige tijd) in English
This is the same in English:

I walk
You walk
He/she/it walks
We walk
You walk
They walk

You can see that the verb stays the same, except for the he/she/it group.

However, the verbs "to be" (zijn) and "to have" (hebben) don't work like this. Learn them by heart!

The SHIT Rule has to do with She, He, and IT.

The rule is:

If the subject is a he, she or it, the verb gets +s.

So I dance becomes She dances.

Slide 16 - Drag question

Samengevat:
1. De present simple is de tegenwoordige tijd van het werkwoord.
2. Kijk altijd naar het onderwerp, deze bepaalt de vorm van het werkwoord. We nemen als voorbeeld "to walk"
3. Is het onderwerp I, you, we, you of they? Dan gebeurt er niets.
--> I walk
4. Is het onderwerp he, she of it? Dan plak je er een "s" achter.
--> She walks

Slide 17 - Slide

The Present Simple
Spelling rule 1

If the verb ends with a -y, this becomes -ies when it follows he/she or it.

HOWEVER: This doesn't happen if there's a vowel (klinker -> a,e,i,o,u) in front of the -y. In that case, the verb gets the regular -s.

I try to be nice --> He tries to be nice.
I buy new shirts online --> She often buys new shirts online.

Slide 18 - Slide

The Present Simple
Spelling rule 2

If the verb ends with a -s, -x, -z, -sh or -ch, you add -es when it follows he, she or it

I watch a movie --> She watches a movie.
I kiss a girl --> He kisses a girl.

Slide 19 - Slide

The Present Simple
The verbs "to do" and "to go"

Both are irregular verbs. Irregular verbs don't follow the general rule. In this case, do/go becomes does/goes when it follows he, she or it.

I do my best --> He does his best.
I go to school --> She goes to school.

Slide 20 - Slide

I often _____ (to play) basketball there.
