Lesson objectives
I know what auxiliaries I have to study and how to use these in an English sentence.
I have continued on this week's task.
Slide 3 - Slide
Grammar:
auxiliaries
Quick overview
hulpwerkwoorden
can/could/be able to
be allowed/may/might
must/have (got) to/should
Slide 4 - Slide
can/could/be able to = kunnen/in staat zijn
tegenwoordige tijd: I can see you. / I am able to see you.
verleden tijd: I could help her. / I was able to help her.
toekomende tijd: I will be able to go there.
voltooide tijd: I have/had been able to finish my work.
daarnaast
:
can/could --> geven mogelijkheid aan: It can happen. / It could rain.
could --> iets aanbieden: I could call you this afternoon.
Slide 5 - Slide
can/could/be able to = kunnen/in staat zijn
could have: iets had kunnen gebeuren maar het is niet gebeurd:
He could have been there (but he wasn't).
They could have been on time (but they weren't).
I could have known (but I didn't).
Slide 6 - Slide
be allowed to/may/might = mogen/misschien kunnen
toestemming geven: to be allowed to
I am allowed to go out tonight.
She is allowed to visit her friend.
They are allowed to talk during class.
In formele situaties kun je ook may/might gebruiken:
May I look around?
Might she come out and see me tonight?
Slide 7 - Slide
be allowed to/may/might = mogen/misschien kunnen
mogelijkheid aangeven: may/might
It may be the case that I am home late today.
They might go out and see a movie.
Slide 8 - Slide
be allowed to/may/might = mogen/misschien kunnen
Iets was mogelijk in het verleden maar is niet gebeurd.
He might have seen us!
You might have let me know.
Let op! Er is soms geen verschil tussen
'could have' and 'might have'. Je kunt dus ook zeggen:
He could have seen us!
You could have let me know.
Slide 9 - Slide
must/have (got) to/should = moeten
tegenwoordige tijd: He must be home by 8. / He has to be home by 8.
verleden tijd: He had to make a test.
toekomende tijd: He will have to listen if he wants to succeed.
voltooide tijd: He has/had had to go see his teacher.
Slide 10 - Slide
must/have (got) to/should = moeten
In de ontkennende vorm betekent het wel iets anders:
You mustn't drive on the left side of the road. (een verbod)
You don't have to listen if you don't want to. (niet verplicht, niet hoeven)
Slide 11 - Slide
must/have (got) to/should = moeten
Daarnaast gebruik je 'must' bij een logische gevolgtrekking.
She must be home by now.
They must walk across this road if they want to get here.
Slide 12 - Slide
must/have (got) to/should = moeten
Should: eigenlijk moeten
I should be home by ten.
They should visit their sick friend.
Should have: had eigenlijk gemoeten, maar niet gedaan
You should have said something when you found out.
I should have been earlier.
