Fossils are petrified remains of an organism, pressed in a sediment. Fossils are extremely important for researching the history of life on earth.

History of animals
Almost all species that are alive now weren't so millions of years ago. However, there where ancestors where those species originate from. A lot of species share a common ancestor that was alive back then.

Proof for this is that a lot of animals are build up the same. They ahve the same organs and structure. We even share some organs that one animals doesn't need anymore. These organs are called rudimentary organs
