Was and were are the Past Simple of To Be

This means that was and were can tell you that something in the past was/were going on.

I was 11 years old last year.
They were on a boat yesterday.
But, we need other verbs to speak in the past as well. And we can use the Past Simple on them too!

Slide 4 - Slide

Was/were

I am in Turkey
(you are still there)
I was in Turkey
(You are now somewhere else)

Past

When we talk about situations that are facts or routines in the past, we use past simple
For to be:
Am = was
is = was
are = were
Simple
For other verbs, we take the verb and add +ed.

Examples:
I walked
He talked
They stalked

There are also verbs called Irregular verbs. These don't work with +ed, they have their own form.
