You can use the present perfect and the past simple to talk about the past. 

You use the past simple for events that happened in the past.
"I went to a rock concert yesterday. "
"We didn’t win the talent show two days ago. "
"Was he on the news last week?"

You can use the present perfect for: 
– events that have started in the past and are still going on; 
– experiences.

"We have waited in line for hours."
"Have you forgotten our tickets? Now we can't get in!"
"I haven’t been to live concerts before."
