Tsunamis are not dangerous until they reach the coast:

1 the wave slows down in the shallow water.

2 the crest of the wave overtakes the trough in front.

3 the wave becomes higher.

The tsunami had a major impact on Japan.

The tsunami caused a nuclear power plant in the city of Fukushima to overheat and explode.

evacuation of people living within a radius of 30 kilometres because of radiation.

  

• The impact remains evident to this day: - soil is contaminated

 - water is polluted -> clean-up work will take at least another 40 years
