Darwin: Survival of the Fittest - animals (humans included) are prone to measure themselves against each other.
The strongest animal has the highest chance to survive.
Kropotkin: Researched animals in Siberia. The cold climate and lack of food meant that it was not the strongest animal that would survive, but the animals who were able to work together to survive the harsh circumstances.
If you're not strong, you have to be smart.
Darwin did not say that the strongest animal in a group has the highest change of survical, but the most adaptive one. That is to say that those who can easily adapt to a new environment or different circumstances have the highest change of survival!
Socio-darwinism
Socio-darwinists use the ideas of Darwin (the strongest will thrive, will the weakest links will remain in place) to explain the inequality in society. In other words: if you start out 'weak' - it may be impossible to climb the social ladder.
Communism
Kropotkin beliefed that humans could also work together to overcome oppression and difficult circumstances. By voluntarily working and living in small communes, people could rise up and become something bigger than themselves.
