Goals
Plan: Listening and talking about conversations

At the end of the lesson:
- can tell the class 3 tips about having a good conversation.
- know 2 expressions to help others speak or interrupt politely

Conversations
What is a conversation?

Raise your hand if it's true for you?
1. I talk more than I listen
2. I'm quiet, so I don't like to talk much
3. I prefer to talk in pairs than in groups
4. I like to hear different opinions

Slide 3 - Diapositive

until 09:10
Conversation: een gesprek. A talk between multiple people.

Emphasize that If there's only 1 person talking and the other is listening, it's not a conversation.

Then ask students about their own communication style with those questions. They raise their hand if it's true for them. I will raise my own hand too if it's true for me or not.
Listening
Life skills communication.
2
Conversation 1. How does this conversation include everyone?
Conversation 2. Is the girl, Poppy, polite?
Conversation 3. How does the boy stop his grandmother's questions? (Bonus question: Is this a -good- conversation?)

Slide 4 - Diapositive

until 09:15
Luister opdracht. 3 conversaties. Vraag wat 'polite' betekent.
Leerlingen luisteren en beantwoorden de vragen

More listening - p. 51
Answer: Which country and which object does the group choose? (ex. 7) and do ex. 8 while listening. (2.5 minutes)

Do exercise 9 when listening a 2nd time. Which expressions are used?

Discuss 7, 8 & 9 afterwards

Slide 5 - Diapositive

until 09:25
Go over the questions in ex. 8 and ask if there's any words they don't know. - 2 min
2.5 min of listening. Before discussing it, move on to 9. Go over the expressions in the book, then listen again. They write down which expressions they hear. (another 2.5 min)
Discuss their answers of 7, 8 and 9 using the online book - 3 min.

A good conversation
What are some tips to have a good conversation?

Slide 6 - Diapositive

until 9:30
Let students think about what makes a good conversation. The slide after this will give a few tips from myself.
4 min
A good conversation
- Listen to each other - not to say your own thing, but to really listen.
- Make sure everyone gets the chance to speak. For example by asking questions (such as 'what do you think')
- Accept each other's opinions. Be kind.
- Ask each other questions in general.

Having a conversation
You and your partner will have a conversation using the handout given to you. Pick who is A and who is B.

Make sure to use all the conversation tips and help each other out to figure out how to say things if you see them struggle.

Make use of the 'useful language' from exercise 9.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

until 9:37/9:40
Hand out the handouts and read out the instructions on the front. To clarify this, read out the the example on the back with one of the students. Ask students if they understand what they have to do.

They get 7 minutes to have a conversation together. 2 minutes to prepare and pick a topic and 5 minutes to actually speak.

I will walk around and listen to them speak.
