can/ be able to 

*can = kan,kunnen (en verandert nooit van vorm)

am/are/is able to kun je ook gebruiken....

Could (zou kunnen, konden)

1.) I couldn't (kon niet rijden) drive to my home the normal way, because there had been an accident. 

2.) We could go to the cinema this weekend or we could go (zouden kunnen gaan) to the amusement arcade.
