Relative pronouns
Slide 16 - Carte mentale
Characteristics of the different types of relative clauses:
Type 1:
• You
need the complete sentence
to know about who (person) or which thing/animal we are talking
• You use
no commas
in the relative clause
• You can often
leave out
who, which or that
(but this is
not possible
when the word after who, which or that is a
verb
).
• You can
choose
whether you choose
who/that
and
which/that.
Slide 17 - Diapositive
Relative clauses:
Type 2:
- The sentence gives you
extra information
that you
can skip
and then you
still know
what or who we are
talking about.
-The extra information is
after/ between (a) comma(s).
-You cannot
use
that,
only who or which
.
- You
cannot skip who or which
Slide 18 - Diapositive
whose
Whose (wiens= geeft bezit aan) = we use whose in relative clauses instead of his/her/their/its
