Conal's Work
Left: The previous student's work was drawn in Photoshop. He was encouraged to design the tribal facial paint for the lead character.

Conal also made a very polished looking storyboard for the cartoon series Samurai Jack to study action sequences and drawing expressions for his live action film.

Lee's Work
Lee used photoshop to create previz for his end of year film. It was so effective it ended up as a film poster.

In this unit 'Storyboarding' is anything that is previsualisation for your films so ANYTHING can form part of your portfolio.

Daibhid's Work
Daibhid was good at keeping all of his rough pencil sketches, you can see that some of his sketches are a work in progress and look great.

Most of the work that you create for this units can be unfinished and rough. You can take some of your favourite drawings and develop them more so they look more refined.

Pencil Storyboards
This is another students pencil/ colouring pencil storyboards.

The use of a little colour was good because it was important to convey how the light was reflecting in a characters eye.

You should use colour when you need to to communicate your ideas better.

Daibhid's Digital Drawings
Here, Daibhid imported a jpg of a storyboarding template into digital drawing software and sketched on top of it as a new layer.

Digital drawing is good because you can have control of colour, tools and you can also collage photos etc.

James' use of a Game for Previz
James was not as happy with his drawings so he decided to try using a game to create characters and play with ideas for blocking action.

This was effective because it was a good way to show the look and tone of the film.

Victoria's Pre Viz for 'Blonde'
Victoria use trace to study the composition of character and colour in Blonde. I liked how she used a little colour in the images to emphasise her iconic lipstick.

You could also trace around stills or photos on Photoshop.

Matthew's Storyboard
Matthew used the ProCreate app on his Ipad and used layers to add colour and textures.

Digital drawing is great for consequence free experimentation!

Many students used drawing tools on their phones last year.

James' Storyboard
I loved the colours and energy in this storyboard, it really conveyed the composition of colour in the shot.

Please don't be afraid of colour!

Victoria's Samurai Jack work
Victoria hand drew some emotions from scenes from Samurai Jack, all the students thought this was a great way to get good at simple faces and expressions.

Cartoons are a good reference for quick faces and I recommend you sketch from life and cartoons.
