They then listen to a phone conversation between two friends, with one asking for recommendations about Shanghai. Ss learn and practise using phrases for recommending a place and responding to recommendations. They focus on using intonation to sound enthusiastic, and then make their own recommendations for places they know well.

Establish that the speaker stresses words they want to emphasise in the more enthusiastic sounding sentences. Elicit which words were stressed. Play the recording again for Ss to listen and repeat.
