Why were the humanists a threat to the Church?

Slide 6 - Question ouverte

Conflict!
The humanists’ ideas were often in conflict with the views of the Church. In the Middle Ages, the Church decided what people should be allowed to read and what not. If a text disagreed with Christian teachings, it was banned. What is more, the Church thought only it was allowed to say what the Bible texts meant. Anyone who thought differently could be called a heretic and would definitely end up in hell.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Humanists
  1. They translated the Bible
    from original texts (Erasmus!)
  2. Think that everybody should
    learn to read and write
  3. Could spread their ideas
through with the help of the printing press

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Most humanists were still very religious and believed in God, why do you think that is?

Slide 9 - Question ouverte

Because......
They still believed in God and the existence of heaven and hell but they no longer automatically believed everything the Church said. They wanted to think about things independently and to develop as individuals on Earth.
