Slide 4 - Diapositive

Topic 1.4 - Learning Goals:
I can…

  • Explain what the different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are and where the different types of waves are found
  • Label the different parts of the human eye and know the function of each part
  • Understand the purpose of the rods and cones in the human eye
  • Explain how the eyes lens bends to focus light, allowing us to see
  • Explain what the problem is for people that are nearsighted or farsighted and which type of lens they need

Topic 1.4 - Key Words:
  • Accommodation
  • Aqueous humor
  • Cones
  • Cornea
  • Farsighted
  • Impulses

1.4 - Electromagnetic spectrum:
Light is a form of energy that travels in waves
The whole spectrum spans a range of waves and frequencies
Part we can see: visible part of the spectrum
Part we cannot see: infrared and ultraviolet part of the spectrum

1.4 - How do you see light?
Light reacts to cells in the retina.
The cells react to light and send impulses, messages, to your brain

Two different types of cells:
  • Rod cells give information on contrast, the black and white picture
  • Cone cells give information on color: red, green and blue

1.4 - Accomodation:
Accommodation: the lens changes its shape in order to see objects sharply from both far away and nearby

Slide 15 - Diapositive

Myopia ⇒ nearsighted

You can see object nearby
Far away objects are not sharp

Hyperopia ⇒ farsighted

You can see objects far away
Nearby objects are not sharp
