What is a city?
  1. A certain number of inhabitants
  2. Densely built
  3. Working population in the secondary or tertiary sector
  4. Large number of facilities

TERMS
Megacity = City with more than ten million inhabitants.
Metropolis = Large, often western city which plays a significant role in part of the world with regards to economy, politics and culture. E.g.: London, New York and Tokyo.

Capital city = Most important city in a country usually housing the government.
Primate city = A city that, based on the number of inhabitants and its
functions, is much larger and more important than the second city in the country.

Urbanisation: People move to cities.
Suburbanisation: People move away from the citycenter to the surrounding area of the city (suburbs).

Suburbs: Living area at the border of a city.

Changing western cities

Old parts of cities are being refurbished. Warehouses and vacant factory buildings are being converted into homes.
This process is called gentrification.

Non-western city
Cities have grown rapidly in non-western countries.
Consequence = slums.

Cities are becoming more and more like western cities. There are areas with high-rise buildings: Central Business District (CBD).

Some residential areas are surrounded by high fences. It houses the rich.
