CH5 Citizens, princes, and the pope

Slide 1 - Diapositive

The time of Cities and States
What do these words mean?
What does that tell you about this period of time?
Can you already tell me what a big difference with the time of Monks and Knights might be?

Slide 2 - Diapositive

5.3 Cities are back! Trade is back!
What caused cities to come back?

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Please read the opening of 5.3 (p101)
Cog - medieval ship that carries a big load and travels both river and sea.

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Questions that come to mind...
Why was a ship found on land (Flevoland) - how is that possible?

Why don't we know exactly how this ship was built?

Why was a ship like this not necessary during the time of Monks and Knights?

Taking notes with mindmaps
You need to stay active as you listen - it'll stick!
You can use your mindmap to revise
Write as you go - but come back and update later!

Takeaway tips
Make a big fancy title
Use colours to make things stand out
Use branches for different topics and ideas
Only put the key things in, you dont need everything

Slide 8 - Diapositive

A mindmap on...
Cities and trade make a comeback!

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Reminder!
Many people left cities when the Roman army couldn't keep them safe. There was little trade (no safety!) and food could not get to cities anyway.

Slide 10 - Diapositive

More food!
From the year 1000: the harvests in Europe got bigger! Why?
- Making forest and swamp suitable for farming
- More horses and oxens are used for farming
- Invention of the iron plough

Food that was spare was sold on the market

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Markets arose
New markets started
- Near intersections of roads
- Near rivers
- Near castles
- Near monasteries

Slide 12 - Diapositive

New and old cities
New cities arose around markets
Less people need to be farmers because of all the food
So cities grew more!
Even old cities grew back!

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Safety
It was safe enough for all of this because:
- There were no more mass migrations
- The Vikings had stopped raiding
- Most people were Christian

Slide 14 - Diapositive

Mindmaps
Let's take a look at eachothers mindmaps
Give tips and tops to your neighbors

Slide 15 - Diapositive

Can we improve? Yes we can!
Open your book and read through the rest of the chapter
Try to add to your mindmap or update existing bits

Slide 16 - Diapositive
