Reported Speech

Reported Speech

Present simple: Jack: "I cycle home"	past simple Jack said that he cycled home.
Present continuous Jack: "I am cycling home"	Past continuous Jack said that he was cycling home
Past simple Jack: "I cycled home"	Past perfect Jack said that he had cycled home
Present perfect Jack: "I have cycled home"	Past perfect Jack said that he had cycled home
Past perfect Jack: "I had cycled home"	Past perfect Jack said that he had cycled home
am/is/are going to Jack: "I am going to cycle home"	was/were going to Jack said the was going to cycle home
can/can't Jack: "I can cycle"	could/couldn't Jack said that he could cycle.
will/won't Jack: "I will cycle home"	would/wouldn't Jack said that he would cycle home.

Reported speech - questions

Reported questions are not real questions so they do not need question marks.

- ‘Do you like rap music?’ ↠ She asked me if I liked rap music.

• When there is no question word (who, what, how, why, etc.), we use if or whether.

‘Can you do it?’ ↠ They asked me if I could do it.

Reported questions 

Direct question: "When are you going on holiday?"

Reported question: She asked when I was going on holiday.

Direct:"Are you related?"

Reported: He asked if/whether we were related.

Direct: "Who is that man?"

Reported: She asked who the man was.

This is the structure that we use:

Reported Speech Imperatives

Structure: reporting verb (e.g. ask, tell) + noun/pronoun + to infinitive

Example: She asked me to come later
