Rule of thumb

• A rule of thumb is a general principle that is roughly correct. It's not precise, but you can use it to calculate.
• For example: 
• You can find the distance  to a lightning strike in kilometers  by counting the number of seconds seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder and divide that number by three.
