MISTAKE in this exercise:

In the 3rd line it says 'drops 0.03 degrees Celsius',

which should be:

'goes up 0.03 degrees Celsius' !

Explanation exercise 39a:

39a At a depth of 200 m the temperature is:

20 + 0.03 x 200 = 26 degrees Celsius

now 39b:

 T(d) = 20 + 0.03 x d

now 39c:

For this mine we have the same kind of formula:

T(d) = b + 0.03d, with b the outside temperature.

Let us fill in (400, 30) ! (next slide)

finishing 39c:

30 = b + 0.03 X 400

30 = b + 12

so   b = 18 is the outside temperature.
