Characters
The main character in Hatchet, Brian Robeson, is a thirteen-year-old boy from New York City. This novel primarily deals with themes of man and nature as well as of self-awareness and self-actualization, mainly through Brian's experiences living alone in the wilderness. Therefore, he is essentially the only principal character.

Mother
The novel doesn’t give us much direct information about Brian’s mother, but Brian’s emotions toward her and memories of home help piece together a fuller picture.  He is resentful toward his mother because he knows she was having an affair while she was still married to his dad.

Father
Brian’s father is a mechanical engineer working in the oil fields of Canada post-divorce. He has designed a self-cleaning bit for oil drilling, hinting at the innovative, resourceful nature that Brian could have inherited. Brian’s detailed knowledge of his father’s job implies he is at least interested in what his father does.
