Unit 1 is about climate change. The Earth has warmed up 1 degree celsius on average over the last few decades

Sub question: 

Climate change, what are the causes?

First: The basics

* On Earth there is greenhouse effect. The atmosphere is made out of gases. About  1% of these gases are greenhouse gases. These gases absorb the warmth earth receives from the sun.

* Without the greenhouse effect the earth would have a different temperature and life would be impossible.

Which of these are greenhouse gases?

1. CO2, methane, water vapour
2. CO2, water vapour, oxigen
3. CO2, oxigen, H2O
4. Methane, nitrogen, oxigen

Facts about climate change

* Due to an increase of greenhouse gases the atmosphere warms causing extreme weather and rising sealevels . But why are scientists so sure about this fact? (explanation will follow...)

* Irriversable damage to the climate we call a  tipping point, fortunately we have not yet reached any of these tipping points and they can be prevented if we act soon

* Without more sustainable action the earth could warm up more than 4.5  degrees  before 2100, compared to 1800! 

How do we know for sure the emission of greenhouse gases is causing the current global warming?

Because there have been climate changes before ...

collega's, let op, bij deze sheet is het van belang dat je goed laat zien dat als je alleen de natuurlijke effecten in ogenschouw neemt de gemiddelde temperatuur op aarde gelijk zou zijn gebleven of misschien zelfs een beetje zou zijn gedaald (Groen+paars+geel) en dat alleen door het effect van rood de temperatuur dus stijgt.

When earth warms up in the North Pole region large areas will melt releasing lots of methane in the atmosphere Methane is a (strong) greenhouse gas. Is this a positive or a negative feedback mechanism? Explain your answer!

What is a Tipping Point?

Climate scientists recognize so called tipping points.

A Tipping Point can occur when a positive feedback mechanism continues to the point where the climate can not return to its original situation.

Those are the moments our climate can change drastically,  very suddenly and irriversibly .

When is an Ice Cap (= a continental glacier) in balance?

When the ice cap on Greenland melts, the sea level will rise:

If all sea ice on the North Pole melts this will not lead to a rise of sealevel, but it will lead to a positive feedback

Weather extreme situations:

- Stronger hurricanes, more precipitation in shorter time

- Extreme heat, but ALSO extreme cold (in places where you would not expect it to happen)....

- Droughts AND floods
