The Past Simple: Gebruik

Wanneer gebruik je de past simple?

• Je gebruikt de past simple wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurt en nu is afgelopen. 
  
• Als er een tijdsbepaling in de zin staat.

Hoe ziet de Past Simple eruit?

• Bij regelmatige werkwoorden (regular verbs):
  

        ww + ed (bv. stay - stayed, walk - walked)

The Past Continuous: gebruik

Adam was doing his homework. 

Wanneer gebruiken we de Past Continuous?

• Wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurt en een tijdje heeft geduurd OF nog bezig is. 

NL:   was/waren aan het….

The Past Continuous: vorm 

Hoe ziet de Past Continuous eruit?

Jonah was walking with his brother. 

The dogs were sleeping on the couch. 

was/ were + hele werkwoord + ing

Past Simple:

• Je gebruikt de past simple wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurt en nu is afgelopen. 
  
• Als er een tijdsbepaling in de zin staat.
  

Past continuous:

• Wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurt en een tijdje heeft geduurd OF nog bezig is.

Past Simple: Grandmother called yesterday. 

Past Continuous: I was cleaning the room. 

Together: Grandmother called while I was cleaning my room.

Past Simple: Grandmother called yesterday. 

Past Continuous: I was cleaning the room. 

Together: Grandmother called while I was cleaning my room

Past Simple vs Past Simple

Past Simple: Grandmother called yesterday. 

Past Continuous: I was cleaning the room. 

Together: Grandmother called while I was cleaning my room.

Why not: Grandmother was calling me when I cleaned my room?
