Past tenses
Past Continuous
One action interrupted by another (e.g., I was sleeping when the phone rang), or
Two actions happening at the same time (e.g., She was reading while he was cooking).

Past Perfect
One action was completed before another in the past. 

Past perfect continuous
Describes an action that had been ongoing for some time before another past action. It emphasizes the duration or continuity of the first action.
