verleden tijd -> any and all forms of verbs to point to something that happened in the past

Past Simple - verb+ed

The Past Simple Tense is used to refer to actions that were completed in a time period before the present time. In the Simple Past the process of performing the action is not important. What matters is that the action was completed in the past. The action may have been in the recent past or a long time ago

I walked home yesterday 
he played football last weekend
I went to Spain last year 
Did you go to Spain last year?

Past Continuous - was/were + verb+ ing

The past continuous describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and were still going on when another event happened

I was walking in the park when my mum called me 
The children were doing their homework when I got home
Last week, as I was driving to work, my favourite song came on the radio

Present perfect -has/have+verb+ed/3rd row
The present perfect tense is an English verb tense used for past actions that are related to or continue into the present, such as ongoing actions or changes over time.

I have gone fishing since I was a child.
He has broken his leg 
I have played football for three years
