Past simple

What does it look like?

Verb ends in –ed, watch out for irregular verbs(p. 111-113) ‘we decided’, ‘I walked’

When do you use it?

When something happened in the past and is finished. You usually also say when it happened.

Past simple

Ik heb vorige week Keanu Reeves gezien
I saw Keanu Reeves last week

Nick is gisteren van zijn fiets gevallen
Nick fell from his bike yesterday

Present perfect

What does it look like?
To have + voltooid deelwoord, b.v. ‘I have slept’, ‘she has been’

When do you use it?

Present perfect 1

Als iets in het verleden is begonnen en nog steeds doorgaat. Vaak in zinnen met for/since + tijdsbepaling en vraagzinnen met how long …?

Lisa has been my friend for five years now
I have had a room of my own since I was twelve
How long have you known each other?

Present perfect 2

Vaak met korte bijwoorden als: always, never, ever, (not) yet, already, just

I have always wondered about that
We’ve never beaten that team yet
Has Maaike already thrown a party?

Watch out!

Met just geef je aan dat de handeling net is afgelopen

I’ve just had a word with him

Present perfect 3

Als de nadruk van een handeling uit het verleden ligt op het resultaat nu/het resultaat is nog merkbaar of belangrijk

I’ve read your letter (so now I know what it says)
Dad has painted that door (it's still wet)
Look, it has snowed! (the snow is still there)
