gebruik 'can' voor: 

  • Mogelijkheden en vaardigheden

2. Could (zou kunnen/ zou mogen/ vt)
Gebruik 'could' voor:

  • Mogelijkheden in de toekomst of verledentijd
We could walk a mile every day if we feel like it.
We couldn't hand in our project last night.

  • Suggesties
You could apologize to him.

  • Formeler/ beleefder dan 'can' om toestemming te vragen.

3. To be able to (kunnen / in staat zijn)
Gebruik 'to be able to' voor:

  • Mogelijkheden/capaciteiten (Ook in specifieke situaties waar 'can' niet kan worden gebruikt.
My mom isn't able to drive us tomorrow; she's broken her leg.
The manager is not able to see you; she's not working today.

Wanneer gebruik je 'may' en 'might'?
1. praten over waarschijnlijkheden/onzekerheid.
2. Om toestemming te vragen of te geven.
4. May (kunnen/mogen/tt)
Gebuik 'may' voor:
  • Mogelijkheden in de toekomst 
I may be late to the party. (misschien)
We may take the train to Berlin (misschien)

  • Toestemming vragen (beleefd/formeel)
May I ask why?
May is formeler dan 'can' of 'could' bij het vragen om toestemming.
5. Might (zou kunnen/zou mogen, verleden tijd)

Gebuik 'might' voor: 
  • Meer onzekerheid dan 'may'
(Kleinere kans dat iets gebeurd)
We might camp on the beach, but I'm not sure yet.
  • Toestemming vragen (zeer formeel, weinig gebruikt in spreektaal)
Might I leave the classroom?

6. Should (zou moeten-advies)
  • Gebruik 'should' als je iemand advies geeft of iets aanraadt
You should listen to her new album. 
He should eat more fruit.

7. Ought to (sterk advies - moreel juist)
  • Gebuik ought to als iets sterker is dan advies, of als het het juiste is om te doen.
You ought to keep your helmet on at all times. 
She ought to pay her parking ticket

Ought to betekent dat iets eigenlijk gedaan moet worden, omdat het juist of belangrijk is.


8. Must (Moeten-persoonlijke noodzaak)

  • Gebruik 'must' als jezelf of iemand anders vindt dat iets echt moet gebeuren. 
I must be there on time. 
We must call the police!
Must: iets is noodzakelijk volgens de spreker. 

9. have to (moeten - verplichting van buitenaf)
  • Gebruik have to als een regel of verplichting van iemand anders komt.
We have to hand in our essay before midnight.
Everyone has to wear uniforms at school.
