Present Simple                 I always go to soccer practice on Mondays.
Past Simple                        He went to the movies last Friday.
Present Continuous       We are trying to remember the tenses right now.
Past Continuous              I was looking for my phone when you called.
Present Perfect                She has lived in Utrecht for two months now.

Present simple - when do you use it?
Feit                                                               She is a girl.
Gewoonte                                                 I always pick my nose.

Present simple - how do you use it?
Only 1 rule to think of!
  • SHIT rule
  • She, He & It get an -s at the end of the verb

I give                 It gives 
You buy           He buys
They talk         She talks

Past simple - when do you use it?
Situatie, gebeurtenis, gewoonte in het verleden
  • I met Selena Gomez at her concert last year!

Iets dat begon in het verleden en nu is afgelopen
  • I took a trip around the world last year.

Past simple - how do you use it?
There are two options for the past simple.
Regular, meaning it follows rules.
Talk         Talked
Work       Walked

Irregular, meaning it does not follow rules.
See          Saw
Drink       Drank

Present continuous - when do you use it?

  • We are listening to Mr. Westra right now.

Een geplande toekomstige actie
  • She is boarding a plane to Namibia this time tomorrow.

Present continuous - how do you use it?
First tense where a auxiliary verbs is neccesary!
You always use a form of To be which are:
  • Am / are / Is

Then add ing to the verb:
We are talking
She is riding
We are enjoying

Past continuous - when do you use it?
Something that was happening in the past over a longer period of time.
  • I was drinking some beers during the Monaco grand prix.

Parallel actions in the past. (things happened at the same time in the past)
  • I was cutting unions while my sister and my brother were mashing the potatoes.

Past continuous - how do you use it?
Similar to the present continuous.

Only difference is the time.
You can change the time of any sentence by changing the auxiliary verb.
  • I am doing               I was doing
  • He is working        He was working 

Still a form of to be but now past: Was / Were

Present perfect - when do you use it?
Something that started in the past and still continues on to this day
  • She has worked at the company for 20 years now.

Something that happened in the past of which this result is still noticable.
  • I have lost my keys. (and now I cant find them)
  • They have seen that movie 20 times already.

Present perfect- how do you use it?
Another tenses which needs an auxiliary verbs, in this case: have.

Use the SHIT rule for have (She / He / It = has)
Use either the past tense or the past participle (for irregular verbs).

  • She has walked to school.

  • They have drunk all the soda in the refrigerator.
