Past simple 

Regular verbs -> Subject + base-ed

Irregular verbs -> ?

To talk about a finished actions/events in the past

Specific moments & non-specific moments

Irregular verbs - past simple

Not the same as regular verbs!

No trick, need to be studied.

Past continuous

Subject + to be (past tense) + base-ing

                          (was/were)

To talk about events in the past that were happening for a while.

Past continuous

Some examples:

• They were watching TV.
• She was reading a book.
• I was relaxing.

Past simple vs. Past continuous

Past simple and past continuous can be used together in a sentence.

Past continuous -> Longer activities

Past simple -> Short activities (often interrupts the longer activity)

We were dancing until the music suddenly stopped.

Past simple vs. Past continuous

Some examples:

• They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened.
  
• Caroline was skiing when she broke her leg.
  
• When we arrived he was having a bath.

1. Something happened in the future
2. something happens every day
3. something happened in the past and is finished
4. something didn't happen yet.
