Indirect vs. Direct Speech

Direct:        Paul said: "I am going on a holiday next week."
Indirect:    Paul said that he was going on a holiday next week.

Direct:        Anna said: "I like your new hair."
Indirect:    Anna said that she liked my new hair.

Indirect speech = vertellen wat iemand eerder gezegd heeft. 

De situatie is hetzelfde:

Is de situatie hetzelfde, dan kan de tijd ook hetzelfde blijven: 

Lisa: "I want to go to Paris next summer."
Lisa said that she wants to go to Paris next summer."

Allan: "My brother doesn't like horror movies."
Allan said that his brother doesn't like horror movies."

Is de situatie voorbij:

Als de situatie is voorbij is (of veranderd), dan wordt de zin altijd verleden tijd: 

Joey: "My brother is going to pick us up."

Joey said that his brother was going to pick us up.

Alex: "I hate Geography."
Alex said that he hated Geography, but now he kind of likes it.

Said vs. told:

Als je wilt aangeven tegen wie iemand iets heeft gezegd gebruik je "told":

"Sonia told me that you were in hospital." 
"What did you tell the police?" 

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je "said" (of "said to")

1. David: "My mother works at a bank."
David said that _________________ and she still
works there."

2. Alex: "I really like your new bag."
Alex said that ____________________ , and he
bought the same one.

3. Bob: "I hate my new job."
Bob said that ____________________, but today he
told me that he actually likes it now.

4. Robert: "I want to go to London next year."
Robert said that ___________, but today he told me he wants to go to Berlin instead.

5. Eric: "I don't like rock music."
Eric said that ________________, but yesterday he
went to a rock concert and loved it.

6. Lisa: "My mum will drive us to school."
Lisa said that ________________ and she was
waiting outside my house right on time.

7. Mila: "I am going to the cinema after school"
Mila said that ____________________, but she was
actually going home.

8. Dave: "I can't come to the party."
Dave said that ________________, but luckily he was
able to move things around and still be there.

9. Julia: "I live near the central station."
Julia said that __________________, but she actually
lives closer to the north of the city.

10. Joey: "I drove to Madrid last year."
In 2021 Joey said that __________________ , but now I know he has never left the country.
