Indirect (Reported) vs. Direct Speech
Direct:        Paul said: "I am going on a holiday next week."
Indirect:    Paul said that he is going on a holiday next week.

Direct:        Anna said: "I like your new hair."
Indirect:    Anna said that she likes my new hair.

Indirect speech = vertellen wat iemand eerder gezegd heeft.

De situatie is hetzelfde:
Is de situatie hetzelfde, dan blijft de tijd ook hetzelfde: 

Lisa: "I want to go to Paris next summer."
Lisa said that she wants to go to Paris next summer."

Allan: "My brother doesn't like horror movies."
Allan said that his brother doesn't like horror movies."

Is de situatie veranderd:
Als de situatie is veranderd, dan wordt de zin verleden tijd: 

Alex: "I hate Geography."
Alex said that he hated Geography, but now he kind of likes it.

Joey: "My brother is going to pick us up."
Joey said that his brother was going to pick us up, but he didn't.

Said vs. told:
Als je wilt aangeven tegen wie iemand iets heeft gezegd gebruik je "told":

"Sonia told me that you were in hospital." (x Sonia said me)
"What did you tell the police?"  (x What did you say the police?)

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je "said" (of "said to")
