Criticism
Criticism of the Church grew through:
      Humanism;
  •  Focus on life, not death.
      printing press;
  •  Books can now be quickly created and distributed.
You may know the motto; Carpe Diem (Seize the day). In the Middle Ages the motto was more Momento Mori (Remember to die).
Erasmus was a well-known Dutch Humanist. You may know his name from the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Erasmus University or his book 'Praise of Folly'.

People who rejected official church doctrine (rules) called the church heretics.

The heretics were tracked down and brought before an special court; The Inquisition
