Past perfect continuous

What is a past perfect continuous?

• express three things: 

1. Something happened in the past...

2. ...it happened before something else in the past...

3. ...it took a while, happened again and again, or it was annoying how long it took

Past perfect continuous

• Other part of the sentence: past simple (yesterday's class)
• Form: had + been + verb + -ing

Examples: 

1. When the bus finally arrived, I had been waiting for an hour.

2. We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when       Jane found her key.

What does a past perfect continuous look like?

1. have/has + been + verb + -ing
2. had + been + verb + -ing

What is NOT true about a past perfect continuous?

1. something happened in the past before something else happened
2. something took a while
3. the sentence often also contains a present simple
4. something was annoying

I ... (to sleep) when my mum came in my room.

1. slept
2. have slept
3. have been sleeping
4. had been sleeping

When I woke up, I saw that it ... (to snow).

1. had been snowing
