Past Simple

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Past Simple -
what do you already know?

Slide 2 - Carte mentale

Past Simple
You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished.
The past simple is what we call in Dutch: de verleden tijd

Slide 3 - Diapositive

When do you use the past simple?

Als het in het verleden is begonnen en het is afgelopen.

Er staan (vaak) signaalwoorden in de zin, zoals 'yesterday', 'last week', 'this morning', 'last year', 'when I was little', 'in 2001', 'ago' etc.

Donald Trump talked about himself on the telly yesterday.
Barack Obama left the White House in January 2017.

Slide 4 - Diapositive

To be: was / were
  • I                           was
  • you                    were
  • he (John)         was
  • she (Janet)     was
  • it                           was
  • we                        were
  • you                      were
  • they                     were

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Making questions using:      was/were
Als je een vraag wilt maken met was of were, zet je was of were vooraan de zin en een vraagteken achteraan:

He was very funny.
Was he very funny?

They were in Spain last year.
Were they in Spain last year?

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Making negations using:     was/were
Als je een ontkenning wilt maken met was of were zet je er NOT achter. Meestal verkort: N'T

He was a funny boy.                                   They were very happy.
He was not a funny boy.                           They were not very happy.
He wasn't a funny boy.                               They weren't very happy.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Past Simple - Regular Verbs
After a regular verb you put '-ed'

I walk -> I walked
He walks -> He walked
They walk -> They walked

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
Als een werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ie:

  • I carry - I carried

Let op, er verandert niets als het werkwoord eindigt op klinker + -y:

  • I play - I played

Als een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:

  • I live - I lived

In de past simple wordt de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:

  • I drop - I dropped

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Past Simple - Irregular verbs
Some verbs in English are irregular, this means that in the past tense they don't get '-ed' at the end, but have their own form.

To write -> wrote; I wrote her a letter last week.
to go -> went; He went to Italy last year.
to catch -> caught:The police caught the criminal two days ago.

Slide 10 - Diapositive
