Herhaling Clauses
We can add clauses to a sentence to add extra information. We talked about:
  • Contrast clauses: Adds different or surprising information to the sentence.
  • Purpose clauses: Gives information about the goal or intent behind the action.
  • Reason clauses: Explains the reason that lead to the action in the sentence.

Grammar: Verbs with two objects
For this Unit is important to remember what verbs, subjects and objects are.
  • Verb: A word that shows an action. (Werkwoord)
  • Subject: The person or thing that performs the verb. (Onderwerp)
  • (Direct) object: The person or thing affected by the verb. (Lijdend voorwerp)

Some sentences have two objects. A direct object and an indirect object. 
  • The direct object (= lijdend voorwerp) is thing (or person) affected by the verb.
  • The indirect object (= meewerkend voorwerp) is the person (or thing) that receives the direct object.

Grammar: Verbs with two objects
  • The indirect object can come before or after the indirect object in the sentence.
  • When the direct object comes first we use 'to' or 'for' before the indirect object.
  • A sentence can only have an indirect object if it has a direct object.

  • How to recognize the direct object: Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' about the verb.
  • How to recognize the indirect object: Find the DIRECT object, and ask who will receive the direct object.
