Today's GOAL: Become a master of Passive! 

Subgoals: 

- being able to recognise direct object.

- being able to recognise indirect objects. 

- Understand why that is useful

- being able to recognise transitive verbs.

- being able to recognise intransive verbs. 

- being able to recognise ergative verbs. 

Unit 2 – section 1- Direct object

What is "direct object"? 

• Direct object = lijdend voorwerp
• The thing/person that the action is done to.
• A direct object is a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord) or pronoun (persoonlijk voornaamworod) that receives the action of a verb.
• It answers the questions what? or whom? about the verb (werkwoord)

Find the direct object:

Mike loves doughnuts.

Find the direct object:

James got his IELTS scores yesterday.

What is "indirect object"? 

• An indirect object = meewerkend voorwerp
• You can find the indirect object by first finding the direct object.
• Then, ask “who” or “what” received it.

Find the  indirect object?

Can you give Tomoko the keys?

Find the  indirect object: 

The bartender made Gracie an ice-cold drink.

What is the correct passive?
He gave Tomoko the keys.

1. Tomoko was given the keys.
2. The keys were given to Tomoko.
3. Both are correct.

Write down the two options:
The gave the award to the unknown actress.

Unit 2 – section 4- TRANSITIVE VERBS

Transitive verbs require an object to complete their meaning.

• Imagine that I say: I bought.
• This sentence is incomplete. There is information that is missing.
• You are probably wondering what I bought. 
• (What did you buy teacher?)
  
• I bought a car.
  

Transitive = overgankelijk

Intransitive = onovergankelijk

Unit 2 – section 4- TRANSITIVE VERBS

Transitive verbs require an object to complete their meaning.

• She likes. 
• She likes = (incomplete - incorrect)
  
• You probably think … She likes WHAT? 
• (What does she like?)
• Like is a transitive verb so we need an object after the verb.
  
• She likes chocolate. 
  
• Now we know what she likes so this sentence is complete and correct.
  

Unit 2 – section 4- TRANSITIVE VERBS

Transitive verbs can have a passive form.

Active: Subject + transitive verb + object

Passive: Object + was/were + transitive verb (+ by subject) 

• Thieves stole his car. (active)
  
• His car was stolen. (passive)

• She likes chocolate. (active)
• Chocolate is liked by her. (passive)

Unit 2 – section 4- INTRANSITIVE VERBS

Intransitive verbs cannot have a direct object after them.

The subject (onderwerp) is doing the action of the verb and nothing receives the action.

• The baby smiled.
• You cannot “smile something”. 

• The apple fell from the tree.
  
• You cannot “fall something” so the verb is intransitive.

Unit 2 – section 4- ERGATIVE VERBS

Ergative verbs are both transitive and intransitive. 

The object when it is transitive is the same as the subject when it is intransitive:

The referee started the match.

The match started at 2.30.

We grew some tasty potatoes.

The potatoes were growing well.

The wind shook the trees.

The trees shook in the wind.
