Present Simple Tense

Present Simple Form

Affirmative

Negation

Questions

Singular/Plural

Affirmative: (positive)

Subject + Verb (1st) + s/es + Object 

Examples:

I enjoy basketball.  

He works at Albert Heijn. 

We travel to school together. 

They like to go to the cinema (on Fridays). 

Negations: (not - n't)

Subject + do/does + not + Verb (1st) + Object

Example:

I do not (don't) enjoy basketball. 

He does not (doesn't) work at Albert Heijn. 

We do not (don't) travel to school together. 

They do not (don't) like to go to the cinema. 

Questions (Interrogative):

Do/Does + subject + Verb (1st) + Object + ?

- Is usually asked directly at someone.

- Ending with a question mark. 

Examples:

Do I like fruit?                                   Don't you (all) want to stay for dinner?

Do you speak English?                 Doesn't he like her?

Does he/she speak English?     

Do we know each other?

Do they like it here? 

Usage: 

to talk about...

Facts, habits, routines, feelings/emotions, general truth

Examples: 

Present Simple Rules:

Using he/she/it - change spelling verb at the end 

Examples: He plays basketball. /The train departs at 7:00. / She looks like a movie star. 

Auxiliary Verbs: (affirmative, negations, questions) 

to be, to do, to have (got)

To be:

Rules (to do):

* Add an -es when a verb ends in -ch, -sh, –th, –ss, –x, or -z. 

* If the verb ends in a consonant followed by -y, change the -y to an -i and add –es. (Example: cry, fly, study, try)

                 (We/They/ You - Plural)

Irregular: (He/She/It - Singular)
