Antagonist
A Physical antagonist - a living, breathing character in the novel (unless he or she is a zombie) that is standing in the way of the protagonist achieving his or her goal.
An Abstract antagonist - some protagonists face off against illness, or grief, or the powers of a corrupt government. We call these kinds of antagonists abstract antagonists because they do not actually take physical form.
