past simple/present perfect
I went to school yesterday.
I have worked on my grammar homework and I'm not finished yet.

I saw someone shoplifting in the supermarket.
I have just witnessed a crime on my street.

The  Past Simple is used when the event is finished and the Present Perfect is used when the event is still continuing or has relevance now.

is used to talk about things that were in progress in the past. They may or may not be finished.

use the past perfect continuous to emphasise a longer action. This action continues up to the time of the main action( expressed by the verb in the past simple.

Use for events that began in the past and continue into the present. Like the present perfect simple, it is often used with since(+ starting point), for (+ period of time) and how long

Use the past perfect simple to talk about what happened before a certain time in the past.
