Slide 2 - Diapositive

Reading practice: texts 6 & 7
Two options:
  1. You work for yourself in silence on these texts. (or you don't, but don't bother other people)
  2. You join the Lesson Up, to do the texts step by step. That way you can ask questions if you need more help.

Make notes of words/strategies to help you remember!

Slide 3 - Diapositive

correct answers Text 5
11: B "when you see somebody in pain, you feel it" = identification
12: A, because it is not the other ones. C seems true, but babies can not indicate yet, why they choose one over the oter.
13: D Strategy: first look at the odd one out, which is A. It is about completely opposing the two paragraphs. C is about differences between the two.
The text says "as predicted" so no contradiction. B gives examples, so something new. D is supportive of the previous study. Code word: "too".

Slide 4 - Diapositive

correct answers Text 5
14: B Make sure you know what the words mean!
"this influences"= sensitive to (gevoelig voor (beïnvloeding))
15: B. Put "because" after the gap. Does that help?
16: Babies prefer (paragraph 5) Code word: "the familiar" vs strangers
17: A, because Not B: genetic make-up = nature, not culture. And not C: no force involved.

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Read paragraph 1 of text 6:

Slide 6 - Diapositive

What is text 6 about? And what is the tone?

Slide 7 - Question ouverte

The writer's feeling about the council's plan is of (question 18)
A
disapproval
B
enthusiasm
C
indifference
D
sympathy

Slide 8 - Quiz

Question 18
Why A?
It says: according to the text as a whole.
But the tone is set in paragraph 1.
The writer is mocking the plan, so enthusiasm, indifference and sympathy is out of the question.
Check your answer after you have dealt with the whole text = after question 23.

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Question 19
Once you have established the tone of paragraph 1.
What does paragraph 2 do?
A is unlikely. We do not expect a success.
The other three might be possible. But look at first sentence:
"many great ideas" = rather silly plans.

Weet je wat ze betekenen?
Welke worden bij citaat 1 en citaat 2 gebruikt?

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Correct answer to question 23
1 = c sarcasme (the writer means the opposite of what he says)
You can expect this, if you have determined the tone of the article correctly.
2 = a beeldspraak (the visitors of the concert are not really gibbons, but behave like apes)
