Prefixes and Suffixes

Voorvoegsels en Achtervoegsels

Letter that you add before and after a word to change the meaning of a word.

Prefixes

• un-

Meaning: "not" or "the opposite". Also to cancel an action (undo)

Examples: unhappy, unused, unfriend

• re-

Meaning: "again"

Examples: rewrite, repaint, redo

suffixes

• -less

Meaning: "without"

Examples: colourless, harmless, fearless

• -ful

Meaning: something/someone has a certain characteristic (eigenschap)

Examples: playful, colourful, harmful

suffixes

• -ing

Meaning: products of actions

Examples: building, painting, drawing

• -er
  

Meaning: a person is doing something

Examples: writer, painter, teacher

What else is -er used for?

Conjunctions: and/but/because
