Eigenschappen:

• ze veranderen niet van vorm (alle personen hetzelfde*)
• Na een hulpwerkwoord krijg je altijd het hele werkwoord
• Vragend en ontkennend op z'n Nederlands.
• Let op!!* to have to is uitzondering. I have to go? Do you have to go. He has to work hard/ Does he have to work hard?

Weet jij het verschil in betekenis tussen deze zinnen?

I can't drive a car, I  don't have my driving licence.

I'm not able to drive my car because I've broken my leg.

Can gebruik je voor een VAARDIGHEID die je wel of niet hebt. (YES,I CAN!)

I can swim very well.   He can run very fast. 

Am/is/are able to

am/is/are/was/were ABLE to gebruik je om te zeggen dat je wel of niet in staat bent om iets te doen

He is not able to swim because he is ill. ( but he can swim, he has an A diploma)

  

I was not able to help you because I had a party. 

Let op: be able to

gebruik je voor:

• omdat iemand niet in staat is; lichamelijk of geestelijk. (ziek, depressie, iets gebroken)
• het niet kan omdat je een andere afspraak hebt.

CAN VS COULD

Can gebruik je voor:

•  een vaardigheid (ik kan het!)

Could gebruik je voor:

• Beleefder dan can.   Could you show me the way?
• verleden tijd van can. I could swim when I was 5 years old

Verschil must/ should/ have to 

Weet jij het verschil in betekenis tussen deze zinnen?

• I must do my homework, because I need a good mark for the test.
• You must see that film! It's hilarious.

iets niet nodig is/ hoeft niet
