Wanneer je van 'direct speech' 'indirect speech' wilt maken:
1. Begin je met degene die het zei.
'Patrick asked if...'
2. Gebruik je altijd een verleden tijdsvorm van zeggen. 
'Patrick said/asked/told/spoke....'
3. Ga altijd een stap terug in de tijd.

'Direct speech' wordt vaak in een tegenwoordige tijd gezegd. 
- 'Is mayonnaise an instrument?' 'I am meeting him today.'

Wanneer jij dit doorvertelt moet je een stap terug in de tijd
- 'He asked if mayonnaise was an instrument.' 
   'He said that he was meeting him today.'
