B - Rules:
  • We use the past simple for an action that happened at 1 moment in the past.  + WHEN DO - DID - DONE
> They heard loud barking. (= 1 moment in past)
  • We use the past continuous for a background action/longer moment in the past.  + WHILE    |    WAS/WERE + ING
> While they were riding, ..

  • then = the next moment (toen/waarna)

B - Rules:
  • We use the past simple to talk about an event that took place at a particular time in the past.  DO - DID - DONE
> They heard loud barking. (= 1 moment in past)
> He looked around the room.
  • We use the past perfect when we need to make it clear that an event took place before another past event. HAD + DONE (/vt.dw. = 3e rijtje)
> There had been a fight.  (= before he looked around the room)

arrived = past simple    /   had left = past perfect (before arriving)
