Wat weet je al over articles (lidwoorden) in het Engels?

Definite article (bepalend lidwoord)

the

- the gebruik je wél in de zin als je specifiek verwijst naar:

1. Een publiek gebouw

They built the hospital in Hardenberg in the 1900s.

2. Een jaargetijde

She was born in the summer of 2008

3. Een maaltijd

The lunch we had today was fantastic!

- Ook gebruik je the bij play bij muziekinstrumenten:

They play the drums.

Definite article (bepalend lidwoord)

Je laat the weg uit de zien als je in het algemeen verwijst naar:

• Een publiek gebouw

He was taken to - jail in a police car.

• Een jaargetijde

I love - summer.

• Een maaltijd

He sometimes skips  lunch.

• Ook laat je the weg uit de zin bij play bij sporten:

Kayleigh likes playing - football.

Indefinite article (onbepaald lidwoord)

a & an

• De lidwoorden a en an gebruik je als je verwijst naar een beroep wat meerdere mensen doen:

"She is an actor"

• De lidwoorden a & an gebruik je niet bij een beroep wat één persoon doet:

"She is - president of the United States"

Wanneer gebruik je a en wanneer gebruik je an?

• a gebruik je bij een woord dat begint met een medeklinker

(a car, a dog)

• an gebruik je bij een woord dat begint met een klinker

(an apple, an interesting idea)
