Grammar :

We might talk about modals but it could very well be something else. I could tell you so many grammar rules that you ought to know.

Look at these sentences

You might study harder for better grades

You should study harder for better grades
Would you like some help?
I can't code and drive

Driving and coding can cause accidents

May I be excused from class?
You must finish the assignment today!

What did you notice about the last sentences, grammar wise.

Modals

Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special verbs which behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of communicative functions.

    They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"
    They are always followed by an infinitive* without "to"

    They  allow speakers to express certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity, ability.

Or...

"Save him not hang him" (it is a telegram received by a jailer who is in the process of executing a capital punishment). This is basically a survival and death matter. if the jailer reads this as
"Save him not, hang him",
On the other hand, if he reads like this,
"Save him, not hang him", means he has to stop the execution process.
